THE SHADE BEHIND KNIT
An exploration of the hidden elegance of knitwear
Knitting is often seen as something old-fashioned, mostly associated with thick, heavy winter clothing meant to keep you warm. With THE SHADE BEHIND KNIT, I wanted to break that image and show that knitwear can also be modern, refined, and elegant.
I explored the contrasts between summer and winter, lightness and heaviness, openness and density. Instead of heavy knits, I focused on creating light, airy pieces through lace knitting. Using self-designed openwork patterns, I made transparent fabrics that feel fresh and soft.
Shadow also became an important part of the project. Just as shadows are created by sunlight, I wanted to reveal a different, hidden side of knitwear. By shining light onto my lace knits from different angles, I created shadow patterns which I then translated into jacquard designs. This interaction between knit and shadow resulted in organic shapes that naturally move with the body.
I chose to work only with natural silk because of its strength, softness, and beautiful sheen. To make the collection as sustainable as possible, I knitted the pieces fully fashioned, leaving almost no waste. The leftover yarns were used to create small accessories like a headband and a bag.
THE SHADE BEHIND KNIT is a dialogue between light and material, tradition and innovation a contemporary reinterpretation of what knitwear can be.

12 LOOKS (2D)
2D Collection
For the design of the remaining 2D looks in this collection, I continued the summery atmosphere that is also present in my two realized outfits. The collection as a whole reflects the elegance and lightness of summer, with which I aim to break the traditional stigma surrounding knitwear, as explored in my concept.
The looks reveal a lot of skin and play with rounded shapes, creating a contrast between the jacquard knits and the openwork ajour knits. The curved lines highlight specific parts of the female body, enhancing the natural elegance of the feminine form.
The knits used in my collection are based on a series of ajour patterns that I designed myself. These patterns form the foundation for the various textures and levels of transparency throughout the collection.

DESIGN PROCESS
CLO 3D Fashion Design Software, APEXFIZ Design Software, Photoshop & Illustrator
The design process began with translating my concept into knitwear designs. To find the right translation, I researched various knitting techniques and experimented with different materials. While working on the knitting machine, I increasingly focused on exploring the techniques of ajour knitting and jacquard knitting.
This experimentation resulted in a curated sample collection of 20 different knit variations. From this collection, I selected the designs that I wanted to further develop into garments.
To support this design process, I made extensive use of CLO 3D Fashion Design Software and APEXFIZ Design Software. These programs helped me digitally develop my ideas for the first time and then accurately translate them into physical pieces.
For creating the knit patterns and designing the jacquard graphics, I used Photoshop and Illustrator, ensuring that the technical execution aligned with my vision and ideas.
